Learn about our Traffic Management

What are UTM parameters and how to use them?

UTMs are tags you add to the end of a link (?utm_source=...) so Google Analytics knows where each visit came from. The five parameters: source (where, e.g. instagram), medium (the type, e.g. social), campaign (the campaign), term (keyword) and content (ad variation). Standardizing the names keeps reports clean.

The 5 UTM parameters

  • utm_source: the origin (instagram, newsletter, google)
  • utm_medium: the channel (social, email, cpc)
  • utm_campaign: the campaign name (black-friday)
  • Always use lowercase and no spaces (use - or _)

Frequently asked questions

What are UTM parameters?

They are tags added to a URL (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign…) that let Google Analytics identify the source of your traffic.

Which parameters are required?

source, medium and campaign are the most important. term and content are optional and useful for ads and A/B tests.

Do UTMs affect the page's SEO?

Not directly, but use a canonical URL so UTM-tagged versions are not indexed as duplicate content.

Frequently asked questions

What are UTM parameters for?
They let Google Analytics (and other tools) identify where traffic comes from: which campaign, channel, and creative brought visits and conversions. So you can compare the performance of each investment.
Do I need a Google Analytics account to use this?
To see the data, yes — GA4 uses UTM parameters automatically. To generate the links, no: you can create URLs here and use them on any channel; when GA is set up on your site, the data will appear in reports.
Where are presets stored?
Presets are stored locally in your browser (localStorage). They are not sent to any server. If you clear site data or use another device, you will need to create the presets again.
