What is North Star Metric?
The North Star Metric is the single metric that best represents the value the product delivers — it guides the whole team, from product to sales.
Famous examples: Airbnb = "nights booked", Spotify = "time listening", Slack = "messages sent in active conversations". Not revenue — it's the VALUE INDICATOR that precedes revenue.
The secret: the metric must be leading (precedes growth), reflects value delivery (not vanity), and be actionable (team can move it). Poorly chosen, it focuses the team on what doesn't matter.
Frequently asked questions
Can I have more than one North Star?
By definition it is ONE. Multiple become "stars", scatter focus. You can have hierarchical sub-metrics, but only one on top.
Does the North Star change over time?
It can in pivot or maturity moments (early focus on activation; later on retention; further on expansion).
