What is Activation?
Activation is the moment a newly signed-up user completes the key action that predicts they'll return — the "aha moment" operationalized.
Each product has its activation action: Facebook = "7 friends in 10 days", Slack = "2,000 messages exchanged in a team", Dropbox = "1 file saved on 1 device + 1 web". Correlation with retention is what validates the metric.
Growth teams attack the activation funnel first: improvements here multiply across all subsequent acquisition investments. Good onboarding pulls activation; bad, destroys the rest of the funnel.

Frequently asked questions
How to find the activation action?
Compare retained vs. early-churned cohorts: what action did the first take in the early days that the second did not?
Is activation the same as aha moment?
Close concepts. Aha moment = when the user "gets" the value. Activation = the operational metric capturing it.
