What is Burn Rate?
Burn rate is how much the company spends in excess of revenue each month — the cash "burn" that defines remaining runway.
Net burn rate is monthly expenses minus revenue. Gross burn rate is just expenses, ignoring revenue. Both feed the runway calculation.
For funded startups, controlling burn is literally survival: cutting 20% of burn is often faster and less risky than chasing 20% more revenue.

Frequently asked questions
Is high burn always bad?
No, if paired with proportional growth and comfortable runway. High burn without growth is the real alarm.
What is the difference between gross and net burn?
Gross is expenses only; net subtracts revenue. Net shows the true cash drain.
